Description

The Resource Ecology and Fisheries Management (REFM) Division of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has a requirement for one bottom trawl vessel to conduct a marine fish survey in 2008. The work consists of a benthic fish bottom trawl survey and a pelagic fish acoustic-and-midwater-trawl survey. The work will take place in the Beaufort Sea beginning around August 1, 2008 contingent on the survey area being free of sea ice and continue for approximately 35 days. The benthic fish survey will consist of 30-minute tows (with an 83-112 trawl or a plumb staff beam trawl) distributed among three survey strata defined by water depth: 20-50m, 50-100m, and 100m-500m. A total of approximately 25 bottom trawls will be conducted as part of a standard survey. The charter will start and end in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The vessel must meet the following minimum requirements: Overall length of 36.5 m (120 ft); main engine continuous 850 horsepower, or a demonstrable capability of towing a 25.3/34.1 m (83/112 ft) (or comparable) trawl along the seabed at a continuous speed of no more or less than 5.6 km/hr (3 kts) under normally expected fishing conditions, and a demonstrable capability to maintain a speed of at least 18.7 km/hr (10 kts) cruising speed in reasonable seas; sufficient fuel holding capacity to conduct survey operations for at least 4 weeks without refueling; completely rigged and ready to fish with commercial scale trawl rigging, two net reels, and split trawl winches; clean, flush deck area at least 55.7 m2 (600 sq ft), and a dry storage area of at least 56.6 cu m (2,000 cu ft); and, clean and sanitary accommodations for captain and crew of five (5) individuals and Government scientific field party of six (6) both male and female. More detailed vessel and crew requirements will be identified in the solicitation.
